Wednesday, 1st May - Chinle
We assembled outside the lodge at 9am to start our four hour tour of the Canyon de Chelly in a former Swiss Army Troop Carrier. Our Navajo driver and guide turned out to be none other than Elton - Suse and Chris had the pleasure of his company on our Route 66 trip in September 2022.
On our previous visit the Canyon was completely dry and very dusty but this time was flooded, but passable, with winter snow meltwater adding to the excitement of the adventure!
Not everyone makes it safely out of the Canyon however ........
From the bottom of the Canyon to the rim varies in height from 700 to 1000 feet and there are many spectacular rock formations and lots of evidence of ancient human habitation.
In the afternoon we drove the south rim of the Canyon and visited the various overlooks looking back down at where we had been in the morning.
Spider Rock at 800 feet tall is amongst the most impressive views.
Dinner of Beef Tips and Chicken Fried Steak in the Thunderbird Cafeteria rounded off a tiring but thoroughly enjoyable day.
all looksood fun
ReplyDeleteA place I would gladly visit a third time - so ancient and mysterious! (The Canyon de Chelle that is, not the Thunderbird Lodge necessarily!!).
