Sunday, 5th May - Grand Canyon
Sadly, today was overcast, chilly and very windy - not ideal for a trip to the Grand Canyon!
After watching a "Wild West Show" at Wiilliams Rail Depot we boarded our observation coach on the 09.30 train to travel at a leisurely pace the 65 miles to the Grand Canyon arriving at 11.45am.
We had pre-booked a "Grand Tour" on a coach which included lunch and stop offs at overlooks only open to tour buses. As with the Meteor Crater yesterday, it is nigh on impossible to adequately photograph the Canyon, it being 277 miles long, 18 miles wide from South Rim to North Rim and a staggering 1 mile deep. In fact it is so deep that, from our vantage points on the South Rim, only the slightest glimpses of the Colorado River could be seen.
We trundled back on the southbound train arriving back in Williams at 17.45 exhausted but elated by what we had seen.
Dinner in the Grand Canyon Spenser Bar warmed us after an uncharacteristically perishing cold day!
It's impossible to appreciate the scale of the Grand Canyon from a distance. I need to visit it myself.
ReplyDeleteAnd did your train get held up by bandits on the way back to Williams? Well I never!
