Saturday, 11th May - Tropic to Moab
After an unexpected but very welcome complimentary breakfast we drove north along what is often described as the most scenic road in the United States, Highway 12, running from Bryce National Park over approximately 100 miles to Torrey. This area was one of the last parts of the USA to be surveyed and mapped and is almost entirely wilderness albeit with majestic rock formations and wonderful vistas around almost every corner. The highway passes through the Dixie National Park and Escalante National Monument.
The final 100 or so miles east and then south to Moab were through a relatively barren and grey landscape.
Our home for the next couple of nights is the rather lovely River Canyon Lodge in the heart of the hip and happening Moab.
The highway rises to a maximum elevation of 9600ft at Boulder Summit down to around 4000ft on the Colorado Plateau.
At Torrey we turned east on highway 24 that passes through the impressive Capitol Reef National Park.
This old wagon could probably tell a few stories .....
